Fashion Hero: Kiel Mead

Kiel Mead makes chic jewelry that’s delicate and girly with a bit of an edge. While I’m not even sure if his designs are really me, I adore his homage to everyday and often unexpected objects. A drillbit or retainer is just as fair game as a heart, you see.

I used to covet his lovely forget-me-knot ring each time I passed the Areaware booth at NYIGF years ago.  And then the ring tempted me again when we sourced it for Artel. (Years later, true story, I almost got a tattoo inspired by this ring design. Long story about how that turned out, but suffice it to say, I’m still ringless, in metal and ink.)

So even though a few friends have this style, and although I have a problem of owning and wearing too many rings already, I think it may just be an inevitable purchase. And one I’ll wear a lot.

Joie de Vivre: Egg Cups

IMG_8537File these under darling but impractical. Now, if I were my grandfather, whom I fondly recall ate a soft-boiled egg doused with pepper every morning, it would be a different story. But while I love eggs and relish the idea of eating them out of these (with a spoon, no less!), this practice somehow doesn’t occur. When I visited the Tendence show in Frankfurt, Germany, I saw egg cups in every incarnation and material. Maybe I’m just not Euro enough to adopt the habit.

This gem-of-an-egg-cup set is courtesy of my former boss at Artel. They are German. They were originally produced in the 70s. And they are totally awesome. Photographing them today inspired me to seek out other egg vessels. Because even if I don’t use them, they would sure look pretty in my kitchen shelf.

Behold my favorites:

From left:1) Not surprisingly, I love the punchy, geometric pattern on these Verner Panton egg cups (Stylishlife.co.uk) 2) The Mr. Egg egg cup by Etsy’s Hello Victory made me think of Sesame Street’s Teeny Little Super Guy, always a good thing; 3) Kathleen Hills’ slick egg cube is the modern antidote to cutesy, retro models. I adore it. 4) Ruby Lane boasts a whopping 531 vintage egg cups for sale. This Homer Laughlin Harlequin double egg cup is simple, but I admire its Fiesta-esque turquoise color and clean lines.  5) The childlike, whimsical shape belies the material–bone china–on Alessi’s fun Goldfish egg cup.
